Muslims who made a difference

AsSalaamu Alaikum! When someone lies about Islam but no one corrects it or disproves it then the lie stands. Today by the Grace of Allah, dozens of Muslims left the comfort of their homes & normal routines to disprove the lies that Muslims are to be feared, that we are a threat and that we are isolated from American society. At the communitywide observance of the 10th Anniversary of 9/11, dozens of Muslims of all ages participated in the program at the BOK Center. Br. Nuredin Giayash gave a well received blessing (a dua), students, young professionals & parents volunteered hours of their day both inside & outside the BOK center, and even more Muslims attended the event to show solidarity with other Tulsans in times of stress. Please make dua for all these unselfish Muslims. MashAllah they made a difference. Other attendees and first responders- firefighters, police, ambulance EMTs and others, all were impressed by them mashAllah.

Ramadan 2011 Announcement!

ISNA Newsletter: "O you who believe, fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that you may (learn) self-restraint." Qur'an 2:183 The Fiqh Council of North America (FCNA) recognizes astronomical calculation as an acceptable Shar'i method for determining the beginning of Lunar months including the months of Ramadan and Shawwal. FCNA uses Makkah al-Mukarram as a conventional point and takes the position that the conjunction must take place before sunset in Makkah and moon must set after sunset in Makkah. On the basis of this method, the dates of Ramadan and Eidul Fitr for the year 1432 AH are established as follows:

The first of Ramadan will be on Monday, August 1, 2011 Insha Allah
Eid ul-Fitr will be on Tuesday, August 30, 2011 Insha Allah

Ramadan 1432 AH: The Astronomical New Moon is on July 30, 2011 (Saturday) at 18:40 Universal Time (9:40 pm Makkah time). Sunset at Makkah on July 30 is at 7:01 pm local time, while moonset at Makkah is 6:41pm local time (20 minute before sunset). Therefore the following day Sunday, July 31, 2011 is not the 1st day of Ramadan. First day of Ramadan is Monday, August 1, insha'Allah. First Tarawih prayer will be on Sunday night.

Eid ul-Fitr 1432 AH: The Astronomical New Moon is on August 29, 2011 (Monday) at 3:04 Universal Time (6:04 am Makkah time). On Monday, August 29, sunset at Makkah is 6:40 p.m. local time, while moonset is at 6:44 pm local time. Therefore, first day of Shawwal, i.e., Eid ul-Fitr is Tuesday, August 30, insha'Allah. The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) follows the calculations of the Fiqh Council of North America www.fiqhcouncil.org (FCNA) to determine the dates of Ramadan and Eid and is excited to share with our community that FCNA has announced this year's dates for both Ramadan and Eid. May Allah (swt) keep us on the right path, and accept our fasting and prayers. Ameen. For more detailed information, please visit: www.fiqhcouncil.org or www.moonsighting.com

Vigil to mark 90th Anniversary of Tulsa Race Riot

Tulsa, Okla. – A walk and candlelight vigil are planned for Tuesday, May 31, 2011, in observance of the 1921 Tulsa Race Riot, called the worst civic disturbance in American history. Tulsans from all parts of the city – north, south, east and west – are encouraged to participate in the Vigil, which organizers hope will become an annual event. Titled “Vigil of Remembrance -- Tulsa Race Riot: 90 Years Later,” the event is being held on the 90th anniversary of what is believed to be the single worst incident of racial violence in America. The Vigil will take place in the Greenwood area, the site of the most tragic chapter in our city’s history. “The assaults of whites against blacks in Tulsa’s Greenwood district on May 31 and June 1, 1921, must not be forgotten, and we must continue our efforts at healing and reconciliation,” Vigil organizers said. Oklahoma Muslims Respond to Osama bin Laden’s Death

(Tulsa, OK 5/2/2011)The Islamic Council of Oklahoma’s spokesperson Sheryl Siddiqui commends President Obama, the intelligence officers and Navy Seals involved in the removal of the threat to humanity called Osama bin Laden. Bin Laden masterminded and instigated the murders of innocent people around the world; his message was an outrageous deviation of everything Islam stands for. He is no martyr- he is a criminal, a terrorist of the worst kind. Read more...

Oklahoma Mosques Thank CAIR-OK Muslims’ First Amendment Rights Are Protected

(Oklahoma City, OK 11-29-10) The Islamic Council of Oklahoma (ICO) celebrates the preliminary injunction announced today by the US District Court blocking State Question 755 from becoming certified into law. If certified this law would have allowed Muslims’ religious rights to be targeted for infringement without the legal recourse guaranteed by America’s Founding Fathers in the Constitution.

Leaders of mosques statewide congratulate and thank the Council on American Islamic Relations Oklahoma Chapter’s Executive Director, Muneer Awad, for defending their First Amendment Rights as he defended his own in District Court this month. Awad, an American-born Muslim, proved to the court that SQ755 could prevent Islamic wills from being probated in Oklahoma; Oklahoma Muslims are concerned about other personal documents as well. Muslims here understand that their religion instructs them to follow the laws of the land where they live and have made no requests and have no expectation that Islamic laws from other countries should become laws here.

“This is a great victory, not just for Muslims, but for Oklahomans of all faiths who seek to enjoy the rights and privileges of this great country. Islam has not, nor will it ever threaten the laws of our land. Good people outside our faith know that Islam is not a threat as exaggerated by some extremists and these non-Muslims see through the fear mongers’ agenda when they seek to use this as a wedge issue for political gain,” said Imam Arif Abdullah of Oklahoma City’s Masjid Mu’min.

The Imam from the Islamic Society of Tulsa’s Masjid Al Salam reacted with joy and appreciated Mr. Awad’s efforts and the judge’s sense of fairness. “I am very pleased that we asked for justice and we got it. This law that discriminates against Muslims was found to be against America’s founding principles and Oklahoma’s Constitution. Muslims are a vibrant part of Oklahoma, living, studying, working and contributing to the general welfare. Muslims are not, and according to the judge’s welcome judgment, cannot be isolated from the community at large.”

State Questions 751 & 755

The Islamic Council of Oklahoma, ISGOC & Islamic Society of Tulsa have all signed on as enthusiastic supporters of Say No To Hate's statements opposing State Questions 751 & 755.

TULSA SAY NO TO HATE COALITION URGES REJECTION OF SQ 751 and SQ 755

Tulsa, Oklahoma (September 1, 2010): The Tulsa Say No To Hate Coalition urges the rejection of State Question 755, the proposed Oklahoma International Law Amendment, that will appear on the November 2, 2010, general election ballot. SQ 755, a legislatively-referred constitutional amendment, would prohibit courts from using international law or Sharia law when deciding cases. Sharia law is Islamic law based on two principal sources: the Koran and the teaching of Mohammed. (Full statement below)
